INTRODUCTION OF TMOP
1. Realizing and recognizing the need for an integrated approach in production, processing, storager, marketing and trade oil and oilseeds, the TMOP was launched in May, 1996. |
2.Public, private & non-govt sectors worked together to capitalize on complimentaries. This lead to an all time record production of oilseeds by the end of nineties when the production was doubled in span of ten years and import bill was as good as nil leading to a self-sufficiency in oil and oilseeds in India. |
| 3.Encouraged with the performance of oilseeds mission, pulses were brought under the Missions umbrella within the single command and control structure in 1990-91. |
| 4.Probably, due to dilution of effort the same attainments were not in pulses as in the case of oilseeds. Also due to lack of effective policy environment and intuatives, huge import of edible oil adversely affected the oilseed production in the country. |
| 5. To meet the growing needs of maize for food, feed, fodder etc., and technology in hand and in the offing, it was felt that tremendous enhancement in maize productivity and production could be realized. Hence, the programme was formulated during Ninth Plan to make maize as an integral part of the oilseeds and pulses mission. |
| 6.Although, special developmental programmes on maize continued but it could not become a part of the oilseeds and pulses Mission. |
| 7.Realizing the technical potential available it is believed that expenditure incurred on implementing the programmes would be off set by the gains through the mission and it is in the context that the proposal with a clear cut objectives is being set for oilseeds, pulses and maize as an integral part of the mission. |
