History: Chandrapur is part of the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. In ancient times the place was known as Lokapur and later Indupur. Much later it came to be named Chandrapur. The Maria Gonds and the Marathas ruled here. In 1853, when Berar was ceded to the British East India Company it came to be called Chanda, the name by which it was known till 1964, when it was renamed Chandrapur. In 1854, it became an independent district of Berar. It was part of the Central Provinces till 1956, when with the reorganisation of states it was transferred to Bombay state. In 1960, when the new state of Maharashtra was created, Chandrapur became a district of that state.
