| History: |
Osmanabad forms part of the
Marathawada region of Maharashtra. In ancient
times the place was known as Dharasiva. Recently
the state government renamed Osmanabad with its
ancient name Dharasiva. The region in ancient
times was ruled by the Satavahanas, the Yadavas,
and in the medieval period by the Delhi
Sultanate and the Mughals till 1724, when it
passed on to the Nizam of Hyderabad. For a brief
period from 1853, it was under the control of
the British, but in 1860 the region reverted to
Hyderabad. Osmanabad was part of Naldurg
district, but in 1905 the new district of
Osmanabad was created. It remained part of
Hyderabad till 1948 when Hyderabad was merged
with the Indian Union. In 1956 with the
reorganisation of states, Osmanabad was
transferred to Bombay state, and thence to
Maharashtra in 1960. In 1982 Osmanabad was
bifurcated into Osmanabad and the new district
of
Latur. | | |
